Today’s your birthday. I will not say
the number; only that if we reverse
the digits, you would still be
in high school—not the happiest
of memories, I’ve heard. Instead,
let’s honor the number as it stands,
a noble one, in gratitude for birthdays
spent joyfully together; in gratitude
even for those birthdays spent in pain,
since all of them were spent in love,
together. And in gratitude for those
birthdays still to come. May they be
many, joyful ones, and always spent,
no matter how the numbers grow,
in love.
