THE PROCEDURE

The gown
open to the rear.
The IV slowly
dripping fluid
into the vein
on the back of my hand.
The nurses, busy.
Gurneys shifting
here and there
on silent wheels.
Voices, everywhere.
Soon, twilight.
I wait and wait.
My turn next?

A friendly wave
from across the ward.
He's done. I'm
yet to go.
